The audit included a detailed evaluation of hard controls, such as physical access systems, perimeter barriers, surveillance infrastructure, and internal security features. Simultaneously, Connley Walker Pty Ltd reviewed soft controlsencompassing administrative procedures, access management protocols, incident reporting processes, and overarching security governance.

As part of the engagement, a lighting assessment was undertaken in accordance with AS/NZS 1158.3.1:2020, the Australian standard for pedestrian area lighting. The assessment focused on key campus areas such as pathways, car parks, and entrances, evaluating lighting levels, placement, and uniformity to ensure compliance with standards and to support visibility and natural surveillance across the site.

The security risk assessment component was conducted using a structured approach based on AS/NZS ISO 31000:2018. Connley Walker Pty Ltd applied this methodology to assess risks specific to the Berwick Campus environment and operations, supporting the identification of targeted, practical risk mitigation strategies aligned with the university’s operational needs and budget constraints.

To ensure the assessment reflected site-specific requirements, stakeholder consultations were undertaken with university representatives, facilities personnel, and campus security staff. These engagements informed the audit and risk assessment process, allowing for tailored recommendations based on localised challenges and campus operations.

A Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) review was also conducted as part of the broader engagement. This review focused on enhancing safety through spatial planning and environmental features that influence surveillance, access control, and territorial definition.

Connley Walker Pty Ltd prepared a comprehensive report outlining the methodology applied, areas assessed, and a structured set of recommendations to support future planning, compliance, and investment in campus security improvements at Berwick Campus.
