Connley Walker Pty Ltd was engaged to undertake a comprehensive security audit and security risk assessment of the Federation University Mt Helen Campus. This engagement formed part of a university-wide initiative to evaluate the performance of existing hard and soft security controls, assess compliance with applicable standards, and identify cost-effective measures to strengthen security across the campus environment.
The audit scope included a detailed review of hard controls, such as physical access points, CCTV systems, perimeter barriers, door hardware, and infrastructure supporting electronic and physical security. In parallel, Connley Walker Pty Ltd assessed soft controls, including security procedures, access policies, incident response protocols, and administrative governance structures.
As part of the engagement, Connley Walker Pty Ltd carried out a lighting assessment in accordance with AS/NZS 1158.3.1:2020. The assessment focused on pedestrian pathways, car parks, and communal areas, evaluating lighting placement, coverage, and uniformity. The purpose of this review was to ensure compliance with lighting standards while supporting safety, natural surveillance, and crime deterrence throughout the Mt Helen Campus.
The security risk assessment was conducted using a structured methodology consistent with AS/NZS ISO 31000:2018. Connley Walker Pty Ltd assessed a range of risk scenarios specific to the campus environment and developed strategies aimed at reducing risk exposure while maintaining operational efficiency and accessibility.
In support of the technical assessment, Connley Walker Pty Ltd facilitated stakeholder consultations with university staff, campus security personnel, and facilities management. These consultations provided operational insights and site-specific context, ensuring that all recommendations were both practical and aligned with the daily functioning of the campus.
A Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) review was also included in the assessment. This element considered the interaction between spatial layout and security outcomes, including natural surveillance, access control through design, and territorial definition.
Upon completion of the engagement, Connley Walker Pty Ltd provided a comprehensive report outlining the scope, methodology, site observations, and professional recommendations. The report was structured to support strategic planning and inform future investment in physical and procedural security enhancements at the Mt Helen Campus.
