The audit encompassed a detailed review of hard controls, including perimeter security, building access points, electronic security systems (such as CCTV and intrusion detection), and physical protections for exhibition spaces, staff areas, and collection storage. In parallel, soft controls were assessed, including procedures for access control, emergency response, visitor management, contractor engagement, and security governance.

Connley Walker Pty Ltd conducted a structured security risk assessment in line with AS/NZS ISO 31000:2018, which provided a systematic approach to identifying security threats relevant to the museum’s operational context, and evaluating the effectiveness of existing controls. The risk assessment also supported the development of practical, scalable strategies to mitigate risks without compromising the accessibility and public-facing nature of the museum.

A comprehensive site inspection was carried out to observe the current security posture and understand how both front-of-house and back-of-house areas were secured. Special attention was given to zones where public interaction, asset storage, and staff movement intersect, as these present unique operational considerations in cultural institutions.

Stakeholder consultations were conducted with museum management and operational staff to understand current practices, site-specific challenges, and future security needs. These engagements helped shape the assessment and ensured that recommendations were consistent with organisational priorities and visitor service objectives.
