Connley Walker Pty Ltd was engaged to conduct a preliminary security review for the proposed Open Hearts Family Violence Centre. The engagement was part of the early planning and design phase of the centre, with the objective of identifying appropriate security risk management strategies while ensuring the facility maintained a safe, welcoming, and non-institutional environment for its clients.
The preliminary review was focused on establishing a foundational security framework to guide future design and operational decisions. Connley Walker Pty Ltd conducted a review of the proposed site layout and functional zoning, considering the facility’s intended purpose and the specific needs of individuals accessing family violence support services.
As part of the engagement, Connley Walker Pty Ltd undertook consultations with key stakeholders involved in the planning and service delivery model for the centre. These consultations helped define the centre’s operational goals and informed the security requirements that would need to be integrated into the built environment and service procedures.
While the facility design was still under development, Connley Walker Pty Ltd applied a high-level security consulting methodology to provide recommendations for the inclusion of layered security principles. These included considerations for discrete access control measures, staff safety provisions, emergency response readiness, and protection of client privacy.
The review also integrated Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, with a focus on natural surveillance, territorial reinforcement, and safe circulation throughout the facility. The CPTED considerations were carefully balanced with the requirement to avoid creating an overly hardened or institutional appearance, ensuring the centre would feel approachable and supportive for clients.
Connley Walker Pty Ltd prepared a formal report outlining the engagement scope and early-stage security planning recommendations. The report served as a foundation for further design development and supported the integration of security strategies that aligned with the centre’s operational philosophy and duty of care obligations.
